Students opting for e-tutoring: Indian Study

Posted ago by Arti Madan

Greater internet penetration in India and the option of learning in the comfort of home while saving money have led to the increased popularity of e-tutorials, which are expected to be a Rs.3,500 crore market by 2015, a study released by an industry lobby said Sunday.

The online tutorial market is growing at an annual rate of 40 percent and is likely to cross the Rs.3,500 crore mark by 2015 from its current level of Rs.1,200 crore, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

“An increasing number of school and college going students are now getting enrolled for online classes which provides them practical insights and individual attention in the comforts of their home at a time convenient to them,” said the survey.

E-tutoring does not require any significant investments but a basic software and hardware set up to support multimedia and internet connection to facilitate interactive study sessions via e-mails and engaging in live discussions and video conferencing, Assocham said.

“There are several websites which offer e-tutoring and the student can pay with his credit or debit card,” an Assocham official told IANS.

The lobby interacted with about 800 parents in cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai between June and August for the study.

Nearly 55 percent of the respondents were aware of online tutorials. While most of them agreed that conventional tuition centres remain their first choice, the others agreed that online tutorials were a better way of learning, revealed the survey.

“E-tutorial is a niche sector that provides limitless world of knowledge as there are various online learning programs that complement every student’s unique learning needs,” Assocham secretary general D.S. Rawat said.

“However, the online tutorial market in India is still at a nascent stage, mainly confined to the urban centres,” he added.

The My Open Campus ecosystem is gearing towards this eventuality. We are creating a neutral platform for elearning vendors to interact with the students seamlessly. Connecting the person who needs to learn to the person who has the knowledge is our goal.

World Education Summit – New Delhi – 2011

Posted ago by Akshat Shrivastava

I had the privilege to participate in the World Education Summit held in Delhi recently. My Open Campus was nominated for an award in the Best ICT for a college category. Having launched just 3 months ago, this was indeed a big honour for my team and a testament that educational institutions across India are looking for revolutionary ideas of teaching and disseminating information.

The Summit had the Minister for Education, Mr. Kapil Sibal speak about the state of our higher education system, the challenges and the opportunities which any player in the market has to face.

A very brief synopsis of the 3 days conference according to me are highlighted below

1. The Higher Education System has to become more inclusive and all encompassing. The current degrees and diplomas, although necessary, cannot be sufficient for future India. We have to become a skill based economy and vocational training, industry experience need to become a part of the curriculum. The teaching methodologies and pedagogy have to imbibe industry practices to create an employable graduate.

2. There is a lot of opportunity in the market for players who understand the space and are looking to help the end user – which can be the students or the college depending on which vertical you are operating in.

3. The most important of all is the quality of education – this has been the bone of contention and desperately needs a revamp. I strongly believe that a disconnect between the industry and teaching will only lead to graduates who are not employable. The demographic advantage of India can only be considered a boon if these youth are properly trained and given the confidence to face the real world. Creating of jobs rather than just becoming an employee has to be one of the key visions of India 2020.

The conference has left the My Open Campus team with a new motivation of reaching across all colleges in India. Driving meaningful education to the masses has been our goal and having heard the leading gurus of the Indian Education space also elucidate this point – has made us even more confident of achieving it.
